They've 'invented' M-Tron: the Korg Triton Pro can duplicate the mighty Mellotron (21st Century Schizoid Band used them to devastating effect), and now, someone's come up with THE MEMOTRON. If you haven't got a clue what I'm banging on about, look at...

Has anyone been close up and personal with one of these? Is it any good? Does it compare?

The consensus over at the Mellotronist list (as was) seemed to be that it sounds like the M-Tron, but is very expensive. (M-Tron is criticised in certain circles for its quality of samples; their opinion was to save an extra $1000 dollars and buy a Mk VI - or indeed an M4000 these days.)

I haven't played one (watched a video though, so that makes me the ultimate expert Wink ) so this is just the repeated opinions of people who know more about Trons than I!

Along with a change of keyboardists, the Moody Blues have also added the use of a Memotron on stage for the current Spring tour. The Memotron website is mentioning one or two recent improvements to their keyboard, so the current model is likely a bit more user friendly.

Rick Wakeman is said to have used two Memotrons while on tour last year. The Memotrons main strength seems to be for its use for a live performance.

It's true, Iwa. There is no substitute for the touch of a Master's hand.

Although it is much more preferred to listen firsthand to the birds of Spring, beauty and wonder are still to be found listening to a good recording of them in the midst of a bleak winter.

But frank appeal to sentiment aside, back in the 60's and 70's wouldn't Mike have gladly given up his Mellotron for a Memotron for his live performances when taking into the account all the trouble it brought to him? At the very least the Memotron is a back saver.

maybe mike had more problems with putting his back out from a computer keyboard than an 8 second one....

but...if used properly (posture attentive)....
inexpensive midi keybs...computers...and couple of specks of software.....
will enable even novice attempts at wonderful creation and performance...
i can record sampled tron melodies on my cell phone and send them to my home computer for those moments of revelation saved - even my laptop carried aboard flights have more computing power than all the equipment on apollo 11 to the moon and back...and with installed home sampled novatron...usb mini keys...headphones....the moon is really close outside the aircraft window...a glorious voyage

so...at the price of 'memotron'......it's design appeal is more sentiment...
it looks like a goose...walks like a goose...quacks like a goose....and pay for it like it lays golden eggs....

Iwa,

Your responses make me painfully aware that I don't have the seed that this garden requires.

Just came back from the Moodies concert here in Asheville, NC. The Memotron sounded like a synthesizer trying to sound like a Mellotron. I think that it was more likely the way they were mixed at the show. In most cases, the Memotron parts were mixed off in the background, which seems to be what producers tend to do these days, regarding keyboards in general. In my band, I'm often told that the keyboards were difficult to hear. There seems to be an unspoken assumption that keys are for backdrop fill.

For live, the mighty mellotron ruled the mix in Mike's day.
Now, it is a backfill well behind the guitars and drum's.
In my opinion anyway Sad

That would be my opinion too. I wonder how much the old mix had to do with their former producer, Tony Clarke. Whoever's running things now seems to prefer a contemporary rock mix. I'm glad I saw them in '72. Sad that they will never again sound like that. having said all that, however, the mix at the show was very full and pleasant. One of the best mixed shows I have been to. Don't know what's gotten into Graeme Edge though. Embarassed
